I am an avid reader. As a child, I always loved to read and spent countless hours reading. I was completely elated when I saw that one of my favorite childhood books – A Wrinkle in Time was made into a movie.
So yesterday, I took myself on a date and went to see A Wrinkle in Time. And yes, ladies, it is okay to take yourself out on a date. This movie brought back so many magical memories for me. In my youth, I did not realize the lessons that the book was teaching. Watching the movie as an adult, there were so many messages about loving yourself, having faith, loving your family, not giving up, believing in yourself, the power of miracles, and I could go on.
There was also another more powerful message in the movie that struck me and stayed with me throughout the day. That message was “What are you giving in to?” In the movie, there was this darkness called “It” that wanted to destroy the light in the world. For me, it was a symbolism of evil trying to take over the good in the world. Each day, we have a choice to choose good or evil, light or darkness.
The evil or darkness is represented in meanness, bullying, racism, hatred, anger, etc. When we give in to hating someone because of the color of their skin or ethnic background, when we give in to bullying someone because they are different from us, when we give in to fear and do not pursue our dreams, when we give in to meanness, when we give in to jealousy and envy, when we give in to holding grudges, when we give in to violence, when we give in to gossiping and backbiting, when we give in to lying, stealing, cheating, when we give in to selfishness, when we give in to manipulation; we are giving in to the darkness, the evil that is destroying this country and world. When we give in to all of the things I just mentioned, we are giving in to the darkness, the evil that is causing poverty, wars, and the type of fearful propaganda that is keeping us from living truly full, loving lives.
When we refuse to give in to the darkness and evil, we are allowing kindness, forgiveness, compassion, generosity, gratitude, empathy, understanding, respect, humility, abundance, and love to lead and guide our lives. When we are led by love, kindness, forgiveness, and all of the other things previously mentioned; we are opening the way for light and goodness to transform this country and world into a place where everyone feels safe, respected, and has their basic needs met.
So today, I ask you, “What are you giving in to?” If you want to see a more loving, kind, just world then refuse to give in to the darkness and evil; and give in to light and goodness. Give in to God.
Peace and Blessings,
Dr. Daphne
